About the Role

mindbodygreen is looking for a Director of Retention to own and scale the lifecycle for our fast-growing direct-to-consumer supplement business. This person will be the single-threaded leader responsible for reducing churn, increasing lifetime value, and building a world-class retention engine across email, SMS, and on-site experiences.

This role requires someone who understands the unique dynamics of subscription health and wellness brands: long consideration cycles, trust-driven purchase decisions, and the critical importance of perceived efficacy in driving repeat behavior.

You will lead a cross-functional effort that touches lifecycle marketing, customer experience, product packaging, and data analytics. This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role: you will set the vision and also roll up your sleeves to build flows, analyze cohorts, and run experiments.

 

What You’ll Own

Retention Strategy & Execution

  • Own the end-to-end subscription retention strategy with a clear mandate to reduce monthly churn and extend average subscriber lifespan

  • Optimize the full subscriber lifecycle: onboarding, engagement, renewal, win-back, and reactivation

  • Build and manage a structured experimentation roadmap across email, SMS, direct mail, and on-site interventions

  • Design segmentation strategies based on product, tenure, engagement signals, acquisition source, and behavioral data

Lifecycle Marketing

  • Own all retention-focused flows in Klaviyo, including post-purchase education sequences, subscription renewal nudges, cross-sell/upsell campaigns, and cancellation save flows

  • Partner with the content and editorial teams to develop retention content that reinforces product efficacy and brand trust

  • Build and optimize a pre-cancellation experience that identifies at-risk subscribers and deploys targeted interventions (pause options, product swaps, dosage adjustments, bundle offers)

  • Develop a post-purchase communication cadence that sets expectations, educates on usage, and creates early wins (e.g., “What to expect in your first 30 days”)

Cross-Sell & LTV Expansion

  • Drive cross-sell and upsell revenue from single-SKU subscribers

  • Build personalized product recommendation logic based on purchase history, wellness goals, and engagement behavior

  • Develop and optimize bundling strategies and loyalty pricing to incentivize multi-product subscriptions

  • Own the subscribe-and-save conversion funnel for one-time purchasers

Analytics & Insights

  • Partner with the data team to optimize retention dashboards with cohort-level visibility into churn, LTV, repeat purchase rates, and subscription tenure by product and acquisition channel

  • Conduct regular cohort analysis to identify patterns in churn and retention by product, price point, and customer segment

  • Partner with data and finance to build LTV models that inform acquisition spend, product development, and pricing decisions

  • Own the voice-of-customer feedback loop: cancellation surveys, NPS, and qualitative research to inform retention initiatives

Team & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Build and lead a small, high-performing retention team (lifecycle marketing manager or agency)

  • Partner closely with performance marketing to ensure acquisition-to-retention handoffs are seamless and that CAC:LTV ratios are optimized

  • Collaborate with product and operations on packaging, fulfillment experience, and subscription flexibility features

  • Work with the creative team to develop retention-specific creative assets, including educational content, testimonials, and UGC campaigns

 

What You Bring

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in retention, lifecycle, or CRM marketing, with at least 2 years in a senior leadership role

  • Proven track record of reducing churn and increasing LTV at a DTC subscription business, ideally in health, wellness, or CPG

  • Deep hands-on experience with Klaviyo, including advanced flows, segmentation, and reporting

  • Strong analytical skills with experience in cohort analysis, LTV modeling, and A/B testing at scale

  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment where you will set strategy and also execute directly

  • Experience with referral and loyalty program design and optimization
